Abstract

This article examines the political dimensions of music through the example of the balalaika and balalaika orchestras in contemporary Finland. Combining historical perspective with personal experience as a musician and ensemble leader, it explores how musical practices and repertoire choices are shaped by broader geopolitical contexts, particularly following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The article traces the historical development of the balalaika and its cultural associations, highlighting how instruments and musical traditions become embedded in political meanings over time. It further reflects on the challenges of performing music linked to Russian cultural heritage in the current political climate, including questions of identity, audience perception and repertoire selection. The discussion demonstrates that even seemingly apolitical musical choices carry political significance and that musicians must actively negotiate these meanings in their artistic practice.
