In English

In this project, a research-based metal refining learning material was developed for basic education level. The project was a part of the University of Helsinki chemistry education course named Chemistry Concepts and Phenomena. Based on the research literature on chemistry education, concepts and sustainable development were chosen as pedagogical perspectives, and the curriculum for the National Board of Education and four schools, as well as the teaching materials available, were used as the reference framework. The training event consisted of four pre-assignments: three videos on the properties of metals, refining, and sustainable development, and an exploration of the concept map. The event started with debriefing of pre-assignments, followed by laboratory work (reduction of copper oxide by carbon to metallic copper), and finally debriefing session of the work based on preparation of mind-maps in groups and discussion of the concepts learned. In conclusion, the copper reduction exercise was show to be well suited to teaching the refining process as it had a direct link to industrial processes. Furthermore, the themes of sustainable development are well reflected in environmental and socio-economical challenges related to mining, metal refining and use and circulation of metals. As a teaching process, the videos were found to work well as a pre-task, although familiarization with the textbook material would have deepened the learning event. The concept map used, combined all perspectives on the chemistry of metals, metal refining should have been differentiated as an own concept map. The mind map served to unload the work, assuming that the concepts’ dependencies were discussed in group. It was also noted that the use of group memory (writing observations in a paper on the wall visible to all) would have improved the teaching event.
}, number={1}, journal={LUMAT-B: International Journal on Math, Science and Technology Education}, author={Hietala, Timo and Lehtinen, Nina and Kokkinen, Tiitus}, year={2019}, month={joulu}, pages={155–176} }
