Support for self-archiving from the library

Helsinki University Library supports self-archiving and open access publishing with its services: information service, training sessions, reminders about self-archiving, TUHAT checking and self-archiving depositing service. This article presents self-archiving and the work and services of the library’s open access team. This is the fourth part of Think Open blog’s article series on self-archiving.

Helsinki University Library supports and guides researchers in all questions related to open access (OA) publishing. This article presents self-archiving and the work and services of the library’s open access team. This is the fifth part of Think Open blog’s article series on self-archiving.

Open access (OA) team

The Library’s open access team consists of 11 people, and their focus is on self-archiving. The goal is to make self-archiving as easy as possible for the researchers of the University of Helsinki. The team offers an information service, training, info sessions and a self-archiving service.

Information service, training and info sessions

The OA team offers an online information service and face-to-face guidance. The team members are invited to attend various faculty, department and unit events, and research seminars to give tailored presentations on the open publishing services. In addition, researchers can request a personal information session or a session for a research group.

Reminders about self-archiving

The OA team sends email reminders to researchers of the University of Helsinki to self-archive. These reminders are sent when information on a researcher’s publication has been saved in the research portal (TUHAT). The opportunity is also given in the email to send the OA team a full text file, and the team will take care of the self-archiving.

Self-archiving service

As mentioned, the focus of the OA team is on self-archiving. Thus, the team deposits full-text files from publications on behalf of researchers. Once a researcher’s publication has been accepted, it can be beneficial to submit the file to the library for archiving. The files of older publications can be sent to the service as well. The OA team does the rest, including verifying versions and publication rights.

Research portal (TUHAT) and self-archiving

The library takes care of the researcher’s publications in the research portal (TUHAT). The OA team checks the information on the publications and imports that information to the portal from databases such as Web of Science. This process includes self-archiving.

Continuous development

The OA team continuously develops its procedures. At this moment, we are developing among other things a process of finding files suitable for self-archiving on the web. We deposit them or import them automatically to our digital repository Helda. In the best case, the process reduces researchers’ self-archiving work.
