Abstract

The strategies of the open access publishing can contain significant threats for the domestic science publishing, writes Tuukka Tomperi in philosophical magazine niin & näin (1/2019). According to a fresh national strategy, it is attempted to get all scientific publications openly available from 2022 onwards. This may make domestic science publishing partially impossible. Creative Commons licences, used in open publications, may change or weaken copyright, especially for the humanistic and social science publications. Within these disciplines the significance of the editing process is bigger and the spectrum of article types wider than those of the publications of other sciences. In addition to research literature, publications may be, for example, overviews in various fields, course books and classics. According to Tomperi, a one-dimensional policy definition of the openness does not necessarily pay enough attention to the special characteristics of the humanistic and social science publication culture and its educational role in society.
