This article provides a systematic analysis of Romanian verbal periphrases and their Slovenian counterparts. The first part outlines a theoretical framework based on Romanian linguistic tradition. It provides a clear conceptual definition of verbal periphrases and proposes a classification that distinguishes primarily between aspectual and modal periphrases. The second part of the article takes a contrastive and translation-oriented approach. Using Mircea Cărtărescu’s short story Bacoviană and its Slovenian translation Bacovijanska by Aleš Mustar as a parallel corpus, the study examines how some Romanian verbal periphrases are rendered in Slovenian. Each identified periphrasis is analyzed in its textual context and compared with its Slovenian equivalent. The analysis highlights convergences and divergences between the two languages, as well as the translation strategies employed, such as structural equivalence, paraphrasing, or lexical substitution. Overall, the article contributes to contrastive linguistics and translation studies by shedding light on the cross-linguistic representation of verbal periphrases between Romanian and Slovenian.
