Abstract

This article addresses the topic of Serbian influences on vocabulary related to traditional culture and cuisine in the Banat Romanian dialect. Its aim is to present, on the basis of dictionary data and academic publications, a list of Banat regional words borrowed into Romanian from Serbian, and to analyze those words that are still in use. The words that remain in use fall into only two groups – words related to traditional culture and words related to cuisine. The analysis aims to present phonetic, grammatical and graphic differences between the Serbian original and the Romanian borrowed word. In the first part, the article provides a theoretical introduction to the  topic under discussion. It clarifies the terms whose correct understanding is crucial for the interpretation of the work. The second part presents a brief outline of the Romanian-Serbian linguistic relations, with special focus on the historical region of Banat. This part also contains a list of words created on the basis of the previously mentioned criteria. The last part presents the author’s analysis of the two groups of words mentioned above that are still used nowadays. The analysis focuses on the phonetic, grammatical and graphic features of the words, and is supported by evidence that people living in Banat still use these words  – more or less frequently – in the online space (social networks, forums, shopping sites, food blogs, portals with regional themes, etc.).
